‘Master Peter Simpkin’ – A Tudor Privateer and Explorer: a crewman who served with Captain Drake, during his circumnavigation of the world, has many tales to tell – of the hardship of life on board ship, of visiting far off lands, of involvement with the slave trade, and of battling against the Spanish as, it should be remembered, one man’s ‘Privateer’ is another man’s ‘Pirate’!
This presentation, which deals with the issues surrounding exploration, trade, slavery, and piracy, is suitable for both an interior and an exterior setting, particularly one with a maritime link, and is illustrated by a range of items supporting the various themes. The presentation, which may be adapted to portray the Settlement of Jamestown in 1607, is also offered to schools in relation to the Key Stage 2 syllabus.
